Young Leadership Across Borders: Israel–Bulgaria Program for Leadership and Young Diplomacy

significant international meetings were recently held, bringing together students from Kiryat Motzkin, Israel, and the International School in Kyustendil, Bulgaria. Led by the International Relations Department of Kiryat Motzkin Municipality, Mashmaut Center, ORT Kiryat Motzkin High School, and the Department for the Advancement of Women's Status and Gender Equality, the program aims to foster young female leadership, deepen intercultural understanding, and strengthen the bonds of friendship between Israel and Bulgaria.

May–June 2026

The first meeting focused on the shared history of the Jewish and Bulgarian people. Participants were introduced to the historic relationship between the two nations, with special emphasis on the remarkable rescue of Bulgarian Jewry during the Second World War and its enduring historical and moral significance. The session also featured a presentation by Inbal Raz, Advisor to the Mayor of Kiryat Motzkin on Women's Status and Gender Equality, who introduced participants to the lives and achievements of pioneering women whose leadership and accomplishments continue to inspire younger generations. Students from Kyustendil presented creative personal videos introducing themselves, fostering meaningful personal connections and strengthening friendships between the two groups.

The second meeting was held in the presence of H.E. Slavena Gergova, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Israel, together with a senior official delegation from the City of Kyustendil, including the Deputy Mayor, the Chair of the City Council, and the Directors of the Departments of Culture and Tourism. During the event, Ambassador Gergova emphasized the importance of the growing partnership between Kiryat Motzkin and Kyustendil and highlighted the program's contribution to strengthening Israel–Bulgaria relations. She also underscored the importance of promoting women's leadership, empowering young women, and increasing female representation in leadership and diplomacy.

As part of the meeting, students from ORT Kiryat Motzkin and the International School in Kyustendil, under the guidance of teachers Shifra Kevin and Gergana, in collaboration with Inbal Raz, presented research projects on pioneering women from Israel, Bulgaria, and around the world. Their work reflected creativity, critical thinking, and a strong commitment to the values of leadership, equality, and intercultural cooperation.

The program is a pioneering initiative, unique at both the national and international levels, combining education, international relations, municipal diplomacy, and the promotion of young women's leadership. In addition to the virtual meetings, it includes student exchange delegations between the two cities. The program will culminate with the signing of an official Twin Cities Agreement between Kiryat Motzkin and Kyustendil, during which the students' research projects will be presented in a festive exhibition in Bulgaria.

במסגרת תוכנית "שגרירות צעירות ופורצות דרך", התקיימו לאחרונה שני מפגשים בינלאומיים משמעותיים המחברים בין תלמידות מקריית מוצקין לבין תלמידות בית הספר הבינלאומי בעיר קיוסטנדיל שבבולגריה. התוכנית, המובלת על ידי תחום קשרי החוץ של עיריית קריית מוצקין, מרכז משמעו"ת, תיכון אורט קריית מוצקין והאגף לקידום מעמד האישה ושוויון מגדרי, נועדה לטפח מנהיגות נשית צעירה, להעמיק את ההיכרות בין התרבויות ולחזק את קשרי הידידות בין ישראל לבולגריה.

במפגש הראשון עסקו המשתתפות בהיסטוריה המשותפת של שני העמים. במסגרת זו הוצגה סקירה על הקשר ההיסטורי בין העם היהודי לעם הבולגרי, תוך התמקדות בסיפור הצלתם של יהודי בולגריה במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה ובמשמעותו הערכית וההיסטורית. בהמשך הציגה ענבל רז, יועצת ראש עיריית קריית מוצקין למעמד האישה ושוויון מגדרי, דמויות של נשים פורצות דרך שהשפיעו על החברה ומהוות מקור השראה לדור הצעיר. תלמידות מקיוסטנדיל הציגו סרטונים אישיים ויצירתיים שהכינו על עצמן, אשר תרמו להעמקת ההיכרות האישית ולחיזוק הקשר בין הקבוצות.

המפגש השני נערך במעמד שגרירת בולגריה בישראל, גב' סלאבנה גרגובה, ומשלחת רשמית בכירה מהעיר קיוסטנדיל, שכללה את ממלא מקום ראש העיר, יו"ר מועצת העיר וראשי אגפי התרבות והתיירות. במהלך המפגש הדגישה השגרירה את חשיבות שיתוף הפעולה המתהווה בין קריית מוצקין לקיוסטנדיל ואת תרומתה של התוכנית לחיזוק יחסי ישראל–בולגריה. בדבריה עמדה גם על חשיבות קידום מנהיגות נשית, העצמת נערות ושילוב נשים במוקדי השפעה ובתחום הדיפלומטיה.

במסגרת המפגש הציגו תלמידות אורט קריית מוצקין ובית הספר הבינלאומי בקיוסטנדיל, בהנחיית המורות שפרה קווין וגרגאנה ובשיתוף ענבל רז, עבודות חקר בנושא נשים פורצות דרך מישראל, מבולגריה ומרחבי העולם. העבודות ביטאו חשיבה ערכית, יצירתיות ומחויבות לערכי מנהיגות, שוויון ושיתוף פעולה בין-תרבותי.

התוכנית מהווה יוזמה חלוצית וייחודית ברמה הארצית והבינלאומית, המשלבת חינוך, קשרי חוץ, דיפלומטיה עירונית וקידום מנהיגות נשית. לצד המפגשים המקוונים, היא כוללת גם חילופי משלחות בין שתי הערים, ובשיאה צפוי להיחתם הסכם ערים תאומות רשמי בין קריית מוצקין לקיוסטנדיל. במסגרת האירועים המתוכננים יוצגו גם עבודות המחקר של התלמידות בתערוכה חגיגית בבולגריה.

Poland–Israel: Roots, Community, and Future - Strengthening Dialogue and Partnership

At the first conference of its kind, held at the Anis Cultural Center in Jaffa, Dr. Lea Ganor, Director of Mashmaut Center and Head of International Relations of Motzkin Municipality, together with Hanna Oren, Coordinator of the Holocaust Research Initiative and a member of Yad Vashem Commission for the Righteous Among the Nations, participated in two major panel discussions dedicated to strengthening the ties between Israel and Poland and deepening cooperation between their communities.

As part of the unique conference, representatives of Mashmaut Center participated in several panel discussions, including Municipal Partnerships and Twin Cities – hosted by Yulia from the Polish Institute, this panel highlighted successful examples of cooperation between twin cities in Israel and Poland, while exploring ways to further strengthen educational, cultural, and community ties between local authorities in both countries.

Literary and Academic Panel – Hosted by writer and journalist Benny Mer, this panel featured Dr. Leah Ganor in her capacity as Head of the Poland Forum at the Finkler Institute for Holocaust Research at Bar-Ilan University. During the discussion, Dr. Ganor presented the newly published volume she co-edited with Prof. Judy Baumel-Schwartz. The book is a comprehensive collection of scholarly studies authored by members of the Poland Forum, focusing on the history and memory of Jewish life in Poland and representing a significant contribution to Holocaust and Jewish historical research.

In addition to its academic and public sessions, the conference program featured a rich cultural component, including a concert dedicated to works by Polish-Jewish composers, adding an artistic and emotional dimension to the professional discussions.

פולין–ישראל: שורשים, קהילה ועתיד: חיזוק הדיאלוג והשותפות

בכנס הראשון מסוגו שנערך במרכז התרבות אניס ביפו, השתתפו ד"ר לאה גנור, מנהלת מרכז משמעו"ת וקשרי החוץ של עיריית מוצקין, וחנה אורן, רכזת מיזם חקר השואה וחברה בוועדת חסידי אומות עולם של יד ושם, בשני פאנלים מרכזיים שעסקו בחיזוק הקשרים בין ישראל לפולין ובהעמקת שיתופי הפעולה בין הקהילות. הכנס אורגן על ידי המכון הפולני בתל אביב ושגרירות פולין בישראל, והיווה במה ייחודית לדיאלוג, להחלפת ידע ולבחינת אתגרי ההווה והעתיד של הקשרים בין המדינות. במהלך ימי הכנס התקיימו מושבים מקצועיים שעסקו במגוון רחב של נושאים, ובהם שיתופי פעולה בין רשויות מקומיות, יוזמות בתחומי החינוך והתרבות, פעילותם של ארגוני יוצאי פולין, שימור המורשת היהודית והזיכרון ההיסטורי, וכן המשכיות בין-דורית.

במסגרת הכנס הייחודי, השתתפו נציגות משמעו"ת במספר פאנלים וביניהם: קשרים מוניציפליים וערים תאומות, אשר הונחה על ידי יוליה מהמכון הפולני, ובו הוצגו דוגמאות לשיתופי פעולה בין ערים תאומות בישראל ובפולין, לצד דיון בדרכים להעמקת הקשרים החינוכיים, התרבותיים והקהילתיים בין הרשויות המקומיות בשתי המדינות.

בפאנל, שהונחה על ידי הסופר והעיתונאי בני מר, בו השתתפה ד"ר גנור בתפקידה כראש פורום פולין במכון לחקר השואה ע"ש פינקלר באוניברסיטת בר-אילן. במסגרת הדיון הוצג הספר החדש שערכה יחד עם פרופ' ג'ודי באומל-שוורץ – אסופת מחקרים מקיפה מאת חוקרי וחוקרות פורום פולין, העוסקת בהיסטוריה ובזיכרון היהודי בפולין ומהווה תרומה משמעותית למחקר בתחום.

לצד המושבים האקדמיים והציבוריים, כללה תוכנית הכנס גם אירועי תרבות ואמנות, ובהם קונצרט שהוקדש ליצירותיהם של מלחינים יהודים-פולנים, אשר הוסיף ממד תרבותי וחווייתי לדיונים המקצועיים.

דברי תודה: הכנס התאפיין ברמה מקצועית גבוהה, באווירה של שיתוף פעולה ובמחויבות משותפת לחיזוק הקשרים בין ישראל לפולין. תודה והערכה נתונות למכון הפולני בתל אביב, לשגרירות פולין בישראל ולכל צוותי הארגון והשותפים לעשייה, אשר תרמו להצלחתו של אירוע משמעותי זה.

Organized by the Finkler Institute of Holocaust Research, the event highlighted the vital importance of historical research, remembrance, and Holocaust education in preserving the memory of the victims of the Jasenovac death camp.

Bar-Ilan University recently hosted a profound and moving event featuring the screening of The Jasenovac Oath, followed by a panel discussion with scholars and experts in Holocaust research. The event was organized by the Finkler Institute of Holocaust Research under the leadership of Professor Judy Baumel-Schwartz and the management of Dr. Itzik Paz.

For one of the panel participants, the evening represented a deeply meaningful closing of a personal and professional circle. Only three months earlier, he had been invited to Belgrade to deliver a lecture at the film's international premiere alongside Professor Gideon Greif. Seeing the film presented now in Israel, and engaging in a thoughtful public discussion afterward, gave the testimonies and historical insights an even greater sense of urgency and significance.

The Jasenovac Oath is a powerful and uncompromising documentary that exposes the horrific crimes committed at the Jasenovac death camp by the Croatian Ustaše regime during the Second World War against Jews, Serbs, and Roma. More than a documentary, it stands as a living memorial—an enduring testament to the victims and an essential contribution to Holocaust remembrance.

Special appreciation was expressed to Barak Gabor, the initiator and producer of the film, for creating an extraordinary work that serves as a lasting monument to the victims of Jasenovac and a deeply personal memorial to the Adler family.

Heartfelt gratitude was also extended to Professor Gideon Greif, one of the world's foremost authorities on the Holocaust in the former Yugoslavia and on Jasenovac, whose decades of groundbreaking research have significantly advanced historical understanding and preserved the memory of the victims.

Special thanks were given to Professor Judy Baumel-Schwartz and Dr. Itzik Paz for organizing this important event and for the invitation to participate in the panel discussion, providing an opportunity to contribute professional perspectives and engage in meaningful dialogue on one of the least-known yet most horrific chapters of Holocaust history.

באוניברסיטת בר־אילן התקיים ערב מיוחד שכלל את הקרנת הסרט "שבועת יאסנובאץ" ורב־שיח בהשתתפות חוקרים ואנשי אקדמיה. האירוע, שנערך במסגרת פעילותו של המכון לחקר השואה על שם פינקלר, הדגיש את חשיבות המחקר, ההנצחה והחינוך לשימור זיכרון קורבנות מחנה המוות יאסנובאץ. אירוע זה מגיע לאחר הקרנת הבכורה הבינלאומית של הסרט בבלגרד שהתקיים לפני שלושה חודשים.

באוניברסיטת בר-אילן התקיים אירוע משמעותי, טעון ומרגש, שכלל את הקרנת הסרט "שבועת יאסנובאץ" ורב־שיח בעקבותיו. האירוע נערך במסגרת פעילותו של המכון לחקר השואה על שם פינקלר, בראשות פרופ' ג'ודי באומל־שוורץ ובניהולו של ד"ר איציק פס.

אירוע זה מגיע לאחר הקרנת הבכורה הבינלאומית של הסרט בבלגרד שהתקיימה לפני כשלושה חודשים, שם נשאה הרצאה ד"ר לאה גנור לצדו של פרופ' גדעון גרייף. כעת, עם הקרנת הסרט בישראל והדיון שנערך בעקבותיו, קיבלו העדויות, המחקר והתובנות משמעות עמוקה נוספת.

הסרט "שבועת יאסנובאץ" מציג באופן עוצמתי ובלתי מתפשר את זוועות מחנה המוות יאסנובאץ ואת פשעי האוסטשה הקרואטית במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה נגד יהודים, סרבים ובני רומה. זוהי יצירה קולנועית מטלטלת המשמשת עדות היסטורית חשובה, מצבה חיה לקורבנות ואמצעי משמעותי להנחלת הזיכרון לדורות הבאים.

במהלך האירוע הובעה הערכה עמוקה לברק גאבור, יוזם ומפיק הסרט, על יצירה יוצאת דופן המהווה עדות היסטורית חיה ואנדרטת זיכרון נצחית למשפחת אדלר ולכל קורבנות יאסנובאץ.

תודה מיוחדת הוקדשה גם לפרופ' גדעון גרייף, מהחוקרים הבולטים בעולם של שואת יהודי יוגוסלביה ומחנה יאסנובאץ, על מפעל חיים רב־שנים של מחקר, תיעוד והנצחה, אשר תרם תרומה מכרעת לחשיפת האמת ההיסטורית ולהנחלתה.

הערכה מיוחדת נמסרה לפרופ' ג'ודי באומל־שוורץ ולד"ר איציק פס על ארגון האירוע ועל ההזמנה להשתתף בפאנל, להציג נקודת מבט מקצועית ולתרום לשיח הציבורי והאקדמי סביב אחד הפרקים הקשים והפחות מוכרים בתולדות השואה.

בדבריה הדגישה ד"ר גנור כי האירוע חידד את ההבנה כי הזיכרון אינו מסתכם בהנצחת העבר בלבד. הוא מחייב מחקר מתמשך, עשייה חינוכית והעברת העדות לדורות הבאים. מתוך האחריות לזיכרון צומחים גם החוסן, הזהות והמחויבות להבטיח שההיסטוריה לא תישכח ולא תחזור על עצמה.

Women's Resilience and Growth Through Adversity

The exhibition "Women's Resilience and Growth Through Adversity", held in the City Hall lobby, brings together artworks created by students and community artists of all ages. Through a unique intergenerational collaboration, the exhibition celebrates the power of art to inspire resilience, hope, and personal growth while reflecting the shared story of Israeli society.

"A society needs its artists just as much as it needs its scientists; the scientists discover the laws of nature, while the artists remind us why we live at all." – Albert Camus

These words capture the spirit of the exhibition "Women's Resilience and Growth Through Adversity," which recently opened in the City Hall lobby.

The exhibition offers a moving glimpse into the Israeli story through the eyes of students and community artists. It is a remarkable intergenerational mosaic that brings together four elementary schools, a junior high-shool and high school, and local artists. Each participant interpreted the themes of women's resilience and growth in a unique and deeply personal way, reminding us that creativity knows no age.

Although the exhibition was postponed due to the war with iran, it ultimately came to life thanks to the dedication, collaboration, and commitment of many partners who believed in its importance.

Special thanks are extended to Mayor Tziki Avisar for providing the prestigious City Hall to show the students and artists work and for his continued support of educational initiatives and intergenerational collaboration. Appreciation is also given to Karnit Cohen, Arts Coordinator for the Haifa District, for her partnership in leading the project; Orit Assayag, Director of the Education Department, for her encouragement and support; and Shiri Meir, the city's Art Curator, for connecting local artists with this meaningful initiative.

בלובי העירייה נפתחה התערוכה "בעקבותיה – חוסן נשי וצמיחה מתוך משבר", המאגדת יצירות של תלמידים, תלמידות ואמני קהילה מכל הגילים. התערוכה מציגה את כוחה של האמנות כמקור לחוסן, לתקווה ולחיבור בין-דורי, ומשקפת את הסיפור הישראלי דרך יצירה אישית וקהילתית.

"כּל חברה זקוקה לאמנים שלה בדיוק כפי שהיא זקוקה למדענים שלה; אלו מגלים את חוקי הטבע, ואלו מזכירים לנו למה אנחנו חיים בכלל." כך אמר הסופר והפילוסוף אלבר קאמי – משפט שקיבל משמעות מיוחדת עם פתיחתה של התערוכה "בעקבותיה – חוסן נשי וצמיחה מתוך משבר" בלובי העירייה.

התערוכה מציעה הצצה מרגשת אל הסיפור הישראלי דרך עיניהם של יוצרים ויוצרות מקהילת העיר. זהו פסיפס בין-דורי ייחודי המחבר בין ארבעה בתי ספר יסודיים, חטיבת ביניים, תיכון ואמני הקהילה. כל אחת ואחד מהמשתתפים בחרו לבטא את נושא החוסן הנשי והצמיחה מתוך משבר בדרך אישית, מקורית ומעוררת מחשבה – והזכירו כי יצירתיות אינה תלויה בגיל, אלא ברוח האדם.

למרות שהתערוכה נדחתה בעקבות מבצע "שאגת הארי", היא יצאה אל הפועל בזכות שיתוף פעולה רחב, מחויבות ונחישות של שותפים רבים שהאמינו בחשיבותה.

את התערוכה הובילה יועצת ראש העיר לשוויון מגדרי וס. מנהלת מרכז משמעו"ת, ענבל רז. תודות מיוחדות לראש העיר, ציקי אבישר, על התמיכה, על העמדת לובי העירייה לטובת הצגת עבודות התלמידים והאמנים ועל העידוד המתמשך ליוזמות ערכיות ולחיבורים בין-דוריים. תודה לקרנית כהן, רפרנטית האמנות של מחוז חיפה, על השותפות בהובלת המיזם; לאורית אסייג, מנהלת אגף החינוך, על ברכת הדרך; ולשירי מאיר, אוצרת האמנות של העירייה, על חיבור אמני הקהילה למיזם.

תודה גם לאירה ליבשיץ, מנהלת מחלקת הקליטה; למיכל טוביה, מנהלת אגף קשרי קהילה; לסילבן על עבודת התלייה וההגברה; לסז'אנה ז'דרוב על הביצוע המוזיקלי המרגש; ולצוות מרכז משמעו"ת על הליווי, העידוד והסיוע לאורך הדרך.

הערכה מיוחדת למנהלות ולמנהלים סוזי ממן, הגר הרמן, קטי חכמיגרי, אבישג חג'אג, ד"ר קרן בבלי ואהוד בן גרא, וכן למורות ולמורים לאמנות – מור גרשון, לידור חייט, אירית מצפה, עמית סטרוגו, ג'ולי בנימוב, אורנה יזדי, שיפרה קווין וניר אברהם – שהובילו את התהליך החינוכי, הרגשי והיצירתי במסירות רבה.

התודה הגדולה ביותר שמורה לתלמידים, לתלמידות ולאמני הקהילה, שביצירותיהם הצליחו להזכיר לכולנו כי גם ברגעים של קושי ומשבר ניתן למצוא תקווה, צמיחה ואור.

אולי משום כך, כל אחת ואחד מאיתנו נושא עמו זיכרון של משפטי החיזוק של אמא או סבתא – אותן מילים פשוטות שהופכות לעוגן ברגעים קשים, מחזקות את הלב ומעניקות את הכוח להמשיך קדימה. התערוכה "בעקבותיה" מבקשת להעניק בדיוק את התחושה הזו: להזכיר שהאור תמיד מצליח לחדור גם דרך הסדקים.

Building Bridges Through Memory, Leadership, and Friendship

Mashmaut Center in Kiryat Motzkin continues to lead educational and international initiatives that combine Holocaust remembrance, youth leadership development, and the strengthening of friendship between nations. As part of a unique partnership with the Bulgarian city of Kyustendil, a delegation of students from ORT Kiryat Motzkin traveled to Bulgaria for an official visit that included the signing of a Twin Cities Agreement, educational exchanges, and the presentation of a joint exhibition created by students from both countries.

For more than three decades, Mashmaut Center has served as a leading educational, academic, and cultural institution dedicated to preserving Holocaust memory, strengthening Jewish and civic identity, and promoting the values of responsibility, leadership, and active citizenship in Israel and beyond.

As part of Kiryat Motzkin's international outreach, the Center has played a key role in developing meaningful educational partnerships across the globe. One of the most significant of these is the growing relationship with the city of Kyustendil, Bulgaria – the birthplace of Dimitar Peshev, recognized as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for his courageous efforts to help save Bulgaria's Jews during the Holocaust.

The partnership was established with the support of Slavena Gergova, Ambassador of Bulgaria to Israel, and has evolved into a dynamic collaboration centered on education, shared values, and historical remembrance.

To give this partnership practical expression, the Mashmaut Center, the Municipality of Kiryat Motzkin, ORT Kiryat Motzkin Educational Campus, and the Municipality of Kyustendil launched the pioneering program "Initiating Tomorrow." The initiative is led by Inbal Raz, Advisor to the Mayor for the Status of Women and Deputy Director of the Mashmaut Center, together with educator Shifra Kevin and the leadership of ORT Kiryat Motzkin under the direction of Ehud Ben-Gera.

Throughout the school year, students from Kiryat Motzkin and the Foreign Language High School in Kyustendil met regularly through online exchanges, exploring the stories of inspiring women from Israel, Bulgaria, and around the world while discussing leadership, equality, and social responsibility. The participants also had the opportunity to meet virtually with Ambassador Gergova.

The program reached its highlight with a student delegation's visit to Bulgaria. Accompanied by Kiryat Motzkin Mayor Tziki Avisar, Dr. Ganor, Director of the Mashmaut Center and International Relations, Deputy Director Inbal Raz, City Council Member Arik Mugerman, and teachers Shifra Kevin and Romit Cicurel, the delegation participated in the official signing ceremony of the Twin Cities Agreement between Kiryat Motzkin and Kyustendil.

A central feature of the visit was the presentation of a collaborative exhibition created by students from both countries, reflecting their shared exploration of history, leadership, and the values that unite their communities.

The educational bridges established between the Mashmaut Center, the Municipality of Kiryat Motzkin, the Embassy of Bulgaria in Israel, the Embassy of Israel in Bulgaria, ORT Kiryat Motzkin, and the Municipality of Kyustendil continue to grow. A reciprocal delegation from Kyustendil is expected to visit Kiryat Motzkin during 2026, further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two communities.

שליחות של זיכרון, מנהיגות וידידות: משלחת חינוכית מקריית מוצקין לבולגריה מחזקת את קשרי הערים התאומות

מרכז משמעו"ת בקריית מוצקין ממשיך להוביל יוזמות חינוכיות ובינלאומיות המשלבות הנצחת זיכרון השואה, טיפוח מנהיגות צעירה וחיזוק קשרי הידידות בין עמים. במסגרת שיתוף פעולה ייחודי עם העיר קיוסטנדיל שבבולגריה, יצאה משלחת תלמידות מאורט מוצקין לביקור רשמי שכלל חתימה על הסכם ערים תאומות, מפגשים חינוכיים והצגת תערוכה משותפת שנוצרה על ידי תלמידות משתי המדינות.

במשך 32 שנים מהווה מרכז משמעו"ת בקריית מוצקין עוגן חינוכי, אקדמי ותרבותי להנחלת זיכרון השואה, לחיזוק הזהות היהודית והחברתית ולקידום ערכי מנהיגות ואחריות בארץ ובעולם. לצד פעילותו החינוכית הענפה, מוביל המרכז גם יוזמות בינלאומיות כחלק ממדיניות קשרי החוץ של עיריית קריית מוצקין.

אחת היוזמות המשמעותיות שנולדו במסגרת זו היא שיתוף הפעולה עם העיר קיוסטנדיל שבבולגריה – עיר הולדתו של דימיטר פשב, חסיד אומות העולם, אשר מילא תפקיד מרכזי בהצלת יהודי בולגריה בתקופת השואה. הקשר בין שתי הערים נוצר בתיווכה של שגרירת בולגריה בישראל, גב' סלאבנה גרגובה, והפך במהרה לשותפות חינוכית וערכית בעלת משמעות עמוקה.

כדי להעניק תוכן ממשי לידידות המתהווה, חברו יחד מרכז משמעו"ת, עיריית קריית מוצקין, קריית החינוך אורט מוצקין והעיר קיוסטנדיל להפעלת המיזם החלוצי "יוזמות את המחר". את המיזם מובילה יועצת ראש העיר למעמד האישה וסגנית מנהלת מרכז משמעו"ת, ענבל רז, בשיתוף שפרה קווין ובהובלת הנהלת אורט מוצקין בראשות אהוד בן גרא. בבית הספר הובילה שפרה קווין את התוכנית, בשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם ענבל רז.

במהלך שנת הלימודים קיימו תלמידות מקריית מוצקין ותלמידות מבית הספר לשפות בקיוסטנדיל סדרת מפגשי זום, שעסקו בנשים פורצות דרך בישראל, בבולגריה ובעולם, במנהיגות נשית ובערכים של אחריות חברתית. במסגרת המפגשים זכו המשתתפות גם לשיחה עם שגרירת בולגריה בישראל.

שיאו של הפרויקט היה ביציאתה של משלחת תלמידות מאורט מוצקין לבולגריה. למשלחת הצטרפו ראש עיריית קריית מוצקין ציקי אבישר, מנהלת מרכז משמעו"ת וקשרי החוץ ד"ר גנור, סגנית מנהלת המרכז ענבל רז, חבר מועצת העיר אריק מוגרמן, והמורות שפרה קווין ורומית סיקולר. במהלך הביקור השתתפה המשלחת בטקס החתימה על הסכם הערים התאומות בין קריית מוצקין לקיוסטנדיל והציגה תערוכה משותפת שיצרו תלמידות משתי המדינות.

הגשרים החינוכיים והערכיים שנבנו בין מרכז משמעו"ת, עיריית קריית מוצקין, שגרירות בולגריה בישראל, שגרירות ישראל בבולגריה, אורט מוצקין והעיר קיוסטנדיל ממשיכים להתרחב ולהעמיק. במסגרת המשך שיתוף הפעולה צפויה במהלך שנת 2026 להגיע לקריית מוצקין משלחת גומלין מקיוסטנדיל, שתמשיך לחזק את קשרי הידידות, ההיכרות והעשייה המשותפת בין שתי הקהילות.

מרכז משמעו"ת מבקש להודות לכל השותפים שהפכו את היוזמה למציאות: לראש העיר ציקי אבישר, לשגרירת בולגריה בישראל גב' סלאבנה גרגובה ולשגרירות בולגריה בישראל, למנכ"ל קריית החינוך אורט מוצקין אהוד בן גרא, לענבל רז, לשפרה קווין, לרומית סיקולר, לחבר מועצת העיר אריק מוגרמן, ליאיר גנור על תיעוד המשלחת, לטוני לוי על יצירת החיבור הראשוני, לתלמידות המשלחת, להוריהן ולכל השותפים לדרך.

המשלחת שבה לישראל עם חוויות מרגשות, חברויות חדשות ותחושת שליחות משותפת – הוכחה נוספת לכך שזיכרון, חינוך וערכים יכולים לבנות גשרים של תקווה, מנהיגות וידידות בין עמים.
