Death for humanity: the story of the Ulma family

A special event that took place at the Mashmaut center in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv and the Polish Embassy in Israel under the sign of humanity – the story of the family of Righteous Among the Nations and the call for the release of Alex Danzig and the abductees.

In preparation for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27.1), and in difficult days in which we are exposed to difficult sights, shocking stories and the fact that still 136 abductees are in Gaza under the terror of Hamas, the mashmaut center held an exciting event calling for the release of Alex Danzig, a historian who became a symbol of the Israeli-Polish dialogue who was kidnapped to Gaza and the release of all the abductees. In the spirit of humanity of the Righteous Among the Nations, the exhibition “Death for Humanity”: the story of the Ulma family, organized by the Polish Institute and the Polish Embassy in Israel, was opened.
The exhibition shows that even in a dark time and in an ocean of hatred there were also humans. The Polish Ulma family from the village of Markowa: Josef, his wife Victoria who was pregnant and their six children were murdered by the Nazis along with the eight Jews they hid in their home. The Ulma family was recognized as followers of the nations of the world by Yad Vashem and were recently declared “saints” by the Vatican.
Kiryat Motzkin and the Meaning Center have a unique connection to the story of the Ulma family and to Markova – the late Holocaust survivor Avraham Segal, who was born in Markova and was among the only survivors who lived in Kiryat Motzkin and was active in the Meaning Center, is commemorated in this exhibition. At every meeting at the Meaning Center, Avraham Segal made sure to convey The message is not to forget the Ulma family and to do as much as possible to perpetuate them. It was a great privilege for the Mishma’at Center to fulfill the order that the late Avraham Segal left behind.
 The mayor and his deputy Adi Sternberg spoke and emphasized the importance of hosting the exhibition as a sign of the struggle for the release of the abductees. Mrs. Aleksandra Gaczynska, the representative of the Polish Embassy in Israel, expressed her hope for the release of the abductees. Thanks to the ‘Atid’ school and the principal of the school, Ehud Ben-Gera, for their cooperation and the donation of the excellent cakes. The event did not leave a single dry eye that ended with a prayer for the release of the abductees.
